Is it time for a new roof?

How do you know if you need a new roof installed? There are a number of signs that hint your roof may be at risk. The first and more obvious is just by looking at it – the eye test so to speak.

Worn, buckling, curling, blistering, cracked, or chipped shingles allow for water to penetrate the protection of shingles and seep into the plywood below.

If you visually see wear and tear on the top of your roof, you should check on the inside of your roof for water stains on the ceilings/attic or blistering or peeling paint and plaster on the ceilings/walls.

Your roof is exposed to some pretty intense elements of New England weather from scorching heat to heavy ice, rain, sleet, and wind. Here are some common sources of wear and the effects:

• Sun’s heat and ultraviolet rays age shingles
• Rainwater below shingles cause rot and mold
• High winds lift shingles and allow for water or debris underneath
• Melting snow refreezes, blocking gutter drainage and water/ice buildup on the edge of your roof

What Causes A Roof To Leak?

Extreme shifts in temperature and weather is why so many houses experience roofing issues like water leaks, rotten rooftops, or missing shingles.

Typically ice dams and wind-driven rain are the culprits for leaky roofs, allowing water to get under a roof’s outer shell — shingles, slate, tile, cedar shake or metal. If your roof is not protected with a waterproof barrier (or extremely weathered due to age), roof damage is the inevitable consequence.

During the winter season, as water (from rain or snow) builds up in the gutters and caves of your roof, ice dams begin to form during the freeze-melt cycle. Trapped water is forced under the shingles and is absorbed by the deck if not properly sealed.

Roofing Shingles
